    Big changes to South African tax filing season

    The South African Revenue Service (SARS) has made changes to the tax filing season for individuals in South Africa, including an extension of the deadline for provisional taxpayers and changes to the penalty regime for non-compliance. Taxpayers are advised to be mindful of the changes and ensure that they have all the necessary documentation and information required for filing their tax returns. The changes are aimed at improving compliance and reducing the burden on taxpayers, and accurate and timely tax filing is emphasized as crucial to avoid penalties and interest charges.

    1. SARS has made changes to the tax filing season for individuals, which will run from 1 July 2023 to 31 January 2024. And had advised taxpayers to be mindful of the changes and ensure that they have all the necessary documentation and information required for filing their tax returns.
    2. The changes to the tax filing season include an extension of the deadline for provisional taxpayers to file their tax returns, as well as changes to the penalty regime for non-compliance.
    3. The changes are aimed at improving compliance and reducing the burden on taxpayers, particularly those who are self-employed or have multiple sources of income.
    4. Taxpayers who are unable to file their tax returns by the deadline should make use of the SARS eFiling system or visit a SARS branch to request an extension.
    5. SARS emphasized the importance of accurate and timely tax filing, as non-compliance can result in penalties and interest charges.
