Wilken Communication Management (WCM), widely regarded by many industry experts as one of the longest-running communications companies in South Africa, has announced a significant leadership transition marking the beginning of a new era for the business.
The company has bid farewell to one of the stalwarts of the South African motoring industry, former WCM CEO Flip Wilken, who has recently retired from operational duties.
Flip Wilken is well known for his influential career in automotive communications, having served as Head of PR at Toyota South Africa and later at McCarthy Motor Holdings alongside industry leader Brand Pretorius. In 1997, he founded Wilken Communication Management, building it into a respected and enduring communications agency with a strong reputation for professionalism, consistency, and industry expertise.
Leadership Transition to the Next Generation
The reins of Wilken Communication Management will now be handed over to his eldest son, Charl Wilken, marking the start of a new chapter in the company’s evolution.
Charl Wilken is well known in the South African motoring landscape not only for his racing and rallying achievements, but also for conceptualising and managing several high-profile automotive initiatives, including the Chery 48-Hour Endurance Records, the Gumtree Pre-Owned Vehicle Awards, and the widely acclaimed 2019 WesBank Fuel Economy Tour.
“I am honoured to take over the reins from such an icon in the motoring industry,” said Charl Wilken. “If I can continue to apply Flip’s principles of honesty, loyalty, and sheer dedication to our clients, I am confident we can build on the legacy he has created.”
Wilken Communication Management is also approaching a significant milestone, with the company on the verge of celebrating 30 years of operation next year. “This is something we can all be proud of,” he added.
Strategic Direction and Business Evolution
Charl Wilken further noted that the company will focus on streamlining operations in response to a challenging economic climate, while simultaneously strengthening existing client partnerships and enhancing customer service and satisfaction.
“We are looking to streamline the business in light of the current economic environment, while building on our established partnerships and striving to deliver even better service to our clients,” he said.
In addition to its core automotive communications offering, WCM has expanded its expertise into other industries and markets, servicing a growing portfolio of clients outside the motoring sector.
The company has also grown its capabilities as a quality video content provider, supported by a skilled team of videographers, editors, and voice-over artists. This expansion reflects WCM’s ongoing commitment to innovation and evolving client needs.
“Ultimately, we will strive to deliver the best service possible, whether it is managing vehicle press fleets, PR accounts, producing video content, publishing magazines, or conceptualising and managing large-scale events,” said Charl Wilken. “And who knows, there may even be another big event on the horizon.”
Strengthening a Team of Industry Experts
Wilken Communication Management continues to be strengthened by a team of highly respected industry professionals.
Charl Wilken paid tribute to Reuben van Niekerk, who will continue in his role as Head Editor of the Wilken Communications’ own Business Fleet Africa Magazine as well as managing editorial responsibilities for the RMI’s Automobil magazine, a relationship now in its sixth year, with both organisations’ committed to making Automobil SA’s premier title focused on all aspects of the automotive aftermarket.
“Reuben has become a key role player in our business over the last few years, and I am very grateful to have him by my side,” Charl said.
The WCM team also includes veteran automotive journalist and ex-Toyota SA PR Roger Houghton, who continues to contribute his extensive experience and exceptional writing skills, as well as Suzanne Walker, a former Toyota South Africa stalwart whose reputation and industry knowledge further enhance the company’s editorial strength.

Appreciation to Clients and Partners
A final message of gratitude was extended to WCM’s long-standing clients and partners.
“A huge thank you must go out to all of our current and previous clients and customers who have kept our wheels turning for the past 29 years,” Charl Wilken said. “I look forward to being at your service for at least another decade or two.”
Looking Ahead
As Wilken Communication Management approaches its 30-year milestone, the company remains committed to its founding values while embracing innovation, diversification, and growth. With a strengthened leadership structure and an experienced team of industry specialists, WCM is well-positioned to continue its legacy as a leading force in South African automotive and corporate communications.
Moving into this new era, WCM are well positioned to assist with custom publishing, events, launches and a wide variety of automotive content creation.
