FNB has launched its Digital Enablement Programme, an 18-month initiative designed to prepare small and medium-sized enterprises for a digital-first economy. The programme focuses on equipping SMEs with the capabilities required not only to survive but to remain competitive in an evolving business environment.
With a client base of more than 1.2 million SMEs across South Africa, FNB has developed data-driven insights into the realities, challenges and opportunities facing small businesses. The programme is delivered in partnership with implementation partner Edge Growth and is tailored to SMEs operating within industries undergoing rapid digital disruption, including manufacturing, logistics, infrastructure, construction and the green economy.
Palesa Moeletsi, SME Business Development Support Manager at FNB, says digital transformation has moved from an optional upgrade to a foundational requirement.
“Digital transformation is no longer optional; it is foundational to how businesses operate, compete, and grow,” she says. “We are seeing a clear shift in how value is created across industries, driven by technology, data, and changing customer expectations. For many SMEs, the challenge is not just adopting digital tools but fundamentally rethinking how they do business.”
Many SMEs remain constrained by barriers such as limited digital skills, high implementation costs, infrastructure challenges and restricted access to funding. The FNB Digital Enablement Programme addresses these barriers through three focus areas: access to skills, access to market, and access to funding.
Through tailored diagnostics, practical workshops, expert advisory and hands-on implementation, SMEs are supported to embed digital thinking into their operations. Moeletsi emphasises the urgency of preparing SMEs for this shift. “Across the industries we support, the risk is clear,” she says. “Businesses that do not adapt to the digital economy will increasingly struggle to compete. Our focus is on preparing SMEs for this new way of doing business by equipping them with the right capabilities, tools, and support systems to transition with confidence.”
