Walmart Targets SA’s Major Cities with 21 New Stores

Walmart is accelerating its expansion in South Africa with plans to open 21 additional stores, concentrating its rollout in Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal and the Western Cape as it deepens its presence in the country’s largest consumer markets.

The US retail giant confirmed that the opening of its third South African store in Boksburg marks the start of a broader national drive aimed at establishing a stronger footprint in high-density urban centres. The latest branch at Eastpoint Shopping Centre replaces a former Game store and follows earlier launches at Clearwater Mall and Fourways Mall in November 2025, both conversions of shuttered Game outlets.

The expansion comes as Walmart’s wholly owned subsidiary, Massmart, evaluates the closure of about 20 Game stores across the country. Employees cited in earlier reports indicated that some of these outlets could be rebranded under the Walmart banner. In KwaZulu-Natal, stores in Amanzimtoti, Ballito, Richards Bay, Pietermaritzburg and The Pavilion are among those affected by restructuring plans. Massmart has stated that the potential closures represent a fraction of its 122-store Game portfolio.

Walmart’s strategy signals a shift towards consolidating prime retail space in economically active regions. Gauteng remains South Africa’s largest provincial economy, contributing over a third of national GDP, while the Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal rank among the top consumer markets by household spending.

Each new Walmart store is expected to support around 80 jobs, with the Boksburg branch managed by retail executive Hector Msane. The retailer is also expanding its 60-minute on-demand delivery radius from 5km to 8km, responding to high repeat usage rates.

The expansion is aimed at strengthening local supplier networks and increasing access to affordable merchandise as Walmart repositions itself within South Africa’s competitive retail sector.
