GWM has given its flagship Tank 500 hybrid SUV a brooding makeover with the launch of the Black Edition in South Africa, sharpening its already imposing road presence through a suite of dark cosmetic enhancements. Priced at R1,228,950 – identical to the outgoing model – the update maintains the same potent powertrain and extensive specification while introducing a stealthier aesthetic that the brand describes as amplifying sophistication and commanding authority.

Externally, the transformation is striking yet subtle: a gloss-black mesh grille replaces chrome, dark-chrome roof rails add contrast, side mirrors lose their bright caps, and 18-inch alloys adopt a full black finish. According to Cars.co.za, these changes align with global trends towards “murdered-out” premium SUVs, a look popularised by Range Rover and Mercedes-Benz AMG lines, helping the Tank 500 stand out in a segment where visual drama increasingly influences buying decisions. The overall silhouette – at 5,078 mm long with a 2,850 mm wheelbase – remains unchanged, preserving its substantial on-road footprint and seven-seat practicality.

Power continues to come from GWM’s sophisticated HEV system, pairing a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine with an electric motor and lithium-ion battery for a combined 255 kW and 648 Nm. Channelled through a nine-speed automatic to all four wheels, it delivers a claimed 10.5 l/100 km while sprinting to 100 km/h in 6.9 seconds – performance that rivals V8-powered rivals from two decades ago. Off-road ability is equally impressive, with Tank Turn functionality, Crawl Control, a rear differential lock, underbody shielding, and ten terrain modes ranging from Snow to Rock.

Inside, the Black Edition elevates luxury with black Nappa leather complemented by dark-metal accents and discreet ambient illumination, creating what GWM South Africa’s Head of Marketing Floyd Ramabulana positions as a statement of bold modernity. The extensive equipment list carries over unchanged: light-sensing LED headlights, automatic side steps, panoramic sunroof, tri-zone climate control, ventilated and massaging front seats, reclining ventilated second-row captain’s chairs, a 14.6-inch infotainment screen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, 12-speaker Infinity audio, heads-up display, and a comprehensive advanced driver assistance package including 360-degree cameras with transparent chassis view.

Ownership benefits remain class-leading, comprising a seven-year or 200,000 km warranty, seven-year or 75,000 km service plan, seven years of unlimited-kilometre roadside assistance, and an eight-year or 150,000 km hybrid battery warranty. As reported by AutoTrader, these terms significantly outstrip most rivals, including Toyota’s Land Cruiser Prado (typically three years/100,000 km), giving the Tank 500 a compelling edge in total cost of ownership calculations.

Since its South African debut in late 2024, the Tank 500 has carved a niche among buyers seeking hybrid efficiency and genuine off-road prowess without the premium pricing of established European marques. The Black Edition, available immediately through GWM’s growing dealer network, reinforces that positioning by blending menacing style with the same mechanical excellence, ensuring the flagship remains a bold alternative in a market where full-size luxury SUVs routinely exceed R2 million.
