BAIC South Africa has announced plans to locally assemble its latest addition to the SUV lineup, the all-new B30 model, at its established facility in the Coega Special Economic Zone near Gqeberha. This development follows the vehicle’s debut at the 2025 Festival of Motoring, where it captured attention for its blend of advanced technology and versatile design tailored to local driving conditions. According to BAIC South Africa’s official newsroom, initial units imported from China will arrive in October, paving the way for domestic production to commence shortly thereafter, with a targeted output of 300 vehicles per month.

The B30 represents a strategic expansion for the Chinese automaker, which has been steadily building its presence in the South African market since establishing its assembly operations in 2018. Built on a modern platform shared with established European manufacturers, the midsize SUV measures 120 millimetres longer than its predecessor and features a more assertive aesthetic, including a lower roofline for enhanced aerodynamics. Available in four variants—two powered by a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine delivering 138 kW, and two hybrid options combining that engine with electric motors for a peak output of 301 kW—the model caters to a spectrum of buyers seeking efficiency and performance. As reported by TimesLive, this hybrid capability positions the B30 as a forward-thinking choice amid South Africa’s push towards greener mobility, with potential incentives under the government’s vehicle emissions tax framework.

Inside, the B30 boasts a sophisticated cabin equipped with a fully digital instrument cluster, a expansive 14.6-inch infotainment touchscreen, and an array of driver assistance systems ranging from adaptive cruise control to lane-keeping aids. Practical touches, such as dual-zone air conditioning, ambient lighting, and a panoramic sunroof, enhance comfort for families, while innovative elements like flat-folding front seats offer flexibility for cargo or leisure pursuits. AutoTrader highlights that these features, combined with competitive pricing starting at around R550,000 for base models, aim to rival popular entrants like the Toyota RAV4 and Volkswagen Tiguan, appealing to cost-conscious consumers without compromising on premium appeal.

BAIC’s decision to ramp up local assembly underscores its long-term commitment to the region, where the company has invested significantly since partnering with the Industrial Development Corporation in 2016. The Coega plant, initially focused on semi-knockdown kits for models like the X25, now supports full knocked-down production across welding, painting, and final assembly lines, creating hundreds of jobs in the Eastern Cape. According to Automotive Logistics, this facility not only serves the domestic market—projected to absorb about 40 per cent of output—but also facilitates exports to neighbouring African countries, the Middle East, and Latin America, bolstering South Africa’s role as a continental manufacturing hub.

This move aligns with broader industry trends in South Africa, where foreign investors are increasingly localising production to qualify for benefits under the African Continental Free Trade Area agreement, which promises tariff-free access to a market of 1.3 billion people. Engineering News notes that BAIC’s expansion comes at a time when the local automotive sector grapples with supply chain disruptions and a shift towards electrification, with the B30’s hybrid variants potentially qualifying for rebates that could make them more accessible. The company’s sponsorship of high-profile events, including the recent G20 Sherpa Meeting and Y20 Summit in 2025, further demonstrates its integration into national dialogues on sustainable development.

For South African drivers, the B30’s arrival signals a maturing choice in the SUV segment, where demand has surged by over 15 per cent year-on-year amid urbanisation and rising fuel costs. By prioritising local content—sourcing components from domestic suppliers where feasible—BAIC is not only reducing import duties but also contributing to skills transfer and economic upliftment in underserved communities. As IOL Motoring observes, such initiatives could help offset challenges like the recent Ford retrenchments, injecting optimism into a sector vital for 7 per cent of the nation’s GDP.

Ultimately, the B30’s local assembly marks a pivotal chapter for BAIC, transforming it from an importer to a key player in South Africa’s automotive narrative. With its emphasis on innovation, affordability, and adaptability, the model is poised to resonate with a diverse clientele, from city commuters to weekend explorers. As production scales, it promises not just more vehicles on the road but a ripple of opportunities that could redefine mobility in the rainbow nation.
