Mark Zuckerberg Wants to end the Smartphone

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has embarked on a mission to diminish the dominance of smartphones by introducing a new alternative: smart glasses. At the recent Meta Connect 2025 keynote, he highlighted the potential of these glasses to enhance social interactions, claiming they could restore the sense of presence often lost with phones.

While Meta’s true aim seems to be capturing market share from tech giants like Apple and Google, the company is promoting its latest smart glasses, the Meta Ray-Ban Display, as a solution to our smartphone dependency. This ambitious product aims to redefine how we interact with technology, potentially rivaling smartphones in popularity.

Despite ongoing concerns from investors regarding the substantial losses incurred by Meta’s Reality Labs division, the recent event showcased the outcome of years of investment. The Ray-Ban Display represents a significant technological advancement, marking a departure from Meta’s previous missteps, like the ambitious but ultimately unfulfilled vision of a social metaverse.

The new glasses boast features similar to Meta’s earlier models, including cameras, speakers, and microphones, alongside an AI assistant. A standout feature is the ability to display Meta apps such as Instagram and WhatsApp directly in the user’s line of sight, along with navigation and real-time translations.

One of the most innovative elements of the Ray-Ban Display is the Meta Neural Band, a wristband that interprets signals between the brain and hand to facilitate gesture-based controls. Although specific details on this technology were not fully explained, it is thought that users can compose texts by mimicking the motion of writing.

During the keynote, Zuckerberg demonstrated the wristband’s capabilities, managing to send messages at a speed comparable to that of traditional smartphones, which is an impressive feat. This new technology allows for discreet communication, eliminating the need for vocal prompts in public spaces, a feature that has been less efficient in existing devices like the Apple Watch.

Meta has heavily invested in research related to this new technology since 2021, indicating a serious commitment to potentially replacing smartphones with smart glasses. However, the effectiveness and practicality of this shift remains uncertain, as many consumers may still prefer the familiar convenience of pulling out a smartphone.

This initiative could prove to be Meta’s most significant gamble yet, surpassing even the underwhelming ambitions for the metaverse. Zuckerberg’s framing of the glasses as a more socially responsible choice than smartphones reflects an awareness of the growing concerns regarding screen time.

Ultimately, the question remains: will smartphones become relics of the past as the world transitions to smart glasses? The answer lies in whether these glasses genuinely enhance our daily experiences, as Meta hopes they will. The Ray-Ban Display might just be the beginning of this potential shift in consumer technology.
