BMW has announced that its new special edition car, the Speedtop, has sold out immediately after its reveal. Only 70 of these cars are being built, all of which were snapped up very quickly. The Speedtop is based on the company’s 8 Series and was shown off at Villa d’Este in May. Although it’s called a concept, BMW confirmed they will produce all 70 units.

During a recent financial update, BMW’s CEO explained that the Speedtop was in high demand right from the start. While no official price has been shared, sources estimate it could cost around half a million pounds. The car features a unique design with a long, wagon-style roof and rear hatch, making it stand out. Under the bonnet, it’s powered by BMW’s most powerful V8 engine — likely the twin-turbocharged 4.4-litre from the M8 — delivering over 600 horsepower and all-wheel drive.

The Speedtop is the second special project based on the 8 Series to be shown at Villa d’Este, following the Skytop last year. The Skytop was a two-door coupe with a removable roof, and BMW planned to make just 50. But the Speedtop, with its limited run of 70 units, is already sold out — a sign of increasing demand for rare, low-volume cars. There’s speculation that BMW might develop more extreme models in the future, possibly even a modern version of the iconic M1 — exciting news for car enthusiasts.
