Airbnb bans surveillance cameras in rental properties

    March 13, 2024By Staff Writer
    Brian Chesky - Airbnb CEO

Airbnb will ban surveillance cameras inside rental properties worldwide starting from April 30, prioritizing customer privacy.

    1. Previously, owners were allowed to have cameras in common areas but not in bedrooms or bathrooms.
    2. The policy update simplifies Airbnb’s approach and clarifies that security cameras are not permitted inside listings.
    3. Airbnb will also revise its policy to provide more comprehensive rules on the use of outdoor security cameras and other devices.
    4. Doorbell cameras and noise decibel monitors will still be allowed, but hosts must disclose their presence and general location.
    5. Outdoor cameras will be prohibited from monitoring indoor spaces and certain outdoor areas with a higher expectation of privacy.
    6. In Kenya, the directive aligns with local authorities’ efforts to review regulatory rules for short-term rentals due to safety concerns.
