Absa has unveiled the Absa Rewards Travel hub, a new digital travel booking platform integrated into the Absa Banking App. This initiative, announced at a media launch in Johannesburg on September 2, aims to provide exceptional value to cardholders and Rewards loyalty programme members.
The platform offers discounts of up to 100% on base fares for local and international flights booked with qualifying Absa debit and credit cards, challenging current market offerings in the travel sector. The public launch of this service is set for later this month.
Alicia Raynard, executive of Absa Rewards, expressed excitement about the new platform, emphasizing the importance of creating memorable travel experiences for clients, from students to Private Wealth customers. She noted that the service aims to make travel more accessible and rewarding.
The new discount model allows clients to receive their discounts upfront based on their Rewards Tier and Absa card at the time of booking. This approach moves away from the traditional cash-back model, which has an accrual period, providing immediate benefits instead.
While the booking platform is available to all Absa clients, only Absa Rewards members can take advantage of the flight discounts. Raynard highlighted that the partnership with Travelstart further demonstrates Absa’s commitment to enhancing the financial and lifestyle experiences of its clients.
Mikha’il Ernest, group chief commercial officer at Travelstart, commented on the collaboration, stating that it aims to make travel booking accessible and efficient. By integrating their technology directly into the Absa app, millions of South Africans will have access to competitive deals and discounts.
Raynard also mentioned that this feature is part of Absa’s strategy to leverage its digital capabilities, creating a comprehensive travel hub for customers. With over two million daily logins to the banking app, Absa aims to broaden its audience and provide a seamless travel booking experience, reinforcing the message that “Your Story Matters.”
