TSAM Achieves 14,146 New Vehicle Sales and 26% Market Share

Toyota South Africa Motors (TSAM) has reported outstanding retail performance for September 2025, achieving a total of 14,146 new vehicle sales and securing a 26% market share in an industry that sold 54,700 units. This marks Toyota’s best monthly performance since March 2022.

The broader automotive industry also performed well, with The Automotive Business Council (naamsa) noting this is the highest industry total since September 2015. Sales volumes increased by 10,700 units (24.3%) compared to September 2024, indicating robust demand amid modest economic growth, tight monetary policy, and growing competition from imported brands.

Toyota led sales across multiple segments, maintaining its position at the top of the market. The Hilux remained South Africa’s best-selling vehicle with 3,639 units sold. Other popular models included the Corolla Cross (1,891), Starlet (1,626), Vitz (1,446), and Urban Cruiser (1,191).

The SUV lineup also saw strong sales, with the Fortuner (842), Land Cruiser Prado (276), Land Cruiser 300 (134), and Land Cruiser 76 Station Wagon (32) contributing to the success. In the commercial vehicle sector, Hino added 229 units, while Lexus sales reached 86, led by the GX (26), RX (24), and NX (16).

September was also a noteworthy month for fleet sales, with TSAM delivering 4,233 vehicles to business customers, reflecting a year-on-year increase of 34%. The company’s Parts Warehouse supplied nearly 2 million parts locally, in addition to exporting 400,000 units.

KINTO South Africa, Toyota’s flexible mobility solutions business, surpassed 5,500 vehicles in operation, marking a significant milestone for the relatively young company.

Leon Theron, Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing at TSAM, commented on the achievement, thanking dealers, sales teams, and manufacturing staff for their contributions. He emphasized the competitive nature of the local automotive market and expressed pride in the continued trust that South Africans place in the Toyota, Lexus, and Hino brands.

While celebrating these results, TSAM acknowledges the ongoing challenges in the market for both customers and manufacturers. Toyota remains committed to delivering the best possible experience to every customer, reinforcing its focus on customer satisfaction amidst a dynamic automotive landscape.
