Stellantis is set to launch the Leapmotor brand in South Africa this September, debuting the C10 electric SUV in the local market. The C10 features a petrol engine solely for charging the battery, with plans for additional Leapmotor models, including fully electric versions, expected next year.
Leapmotor has garnered attention with the recent rollout of its all-electric B10 SUV, which boasts smart-driving features and lidar technology, priced under $18,000. Earlier this year, Stellantis acquired a 21% stake in Leapmotor for $1.6 billion, forming the joint venture Leapmotor International, where Stellantis holds a 51% stake.
Mike Whitfield, MD of Stellantis South Africa and Sub-Saharan Africa, emphasized South Africa’s significance as a critical market, stating the company is committed to unlocking its potential through innovative products and partnerships. Stellantis, which entered the South African market four years ago, is constructing a new plant with a maximum capacity of 100,000 vehicles by 2030, aiming to sell one million vehicles in the Middle East and Africa region, with 35% projected to be electric.
In 2024, Stellantis sold 500,000 cars in the Middle East and Africa. With over 60% of the South African market concentrated below the R400,000 price point, the Citroën C3 range is gaining traction, and the upcoming C3 Basalt will enhance its competitive lineup in the B-hatch and SUV segments early next year.
Stellantis is also preparing to launch the Citroën C3 Hola panel van, targeting the growing commercial vehicle sector aimed at small business owners.
