Despite operating challenges and a decline in December sales compared to the previous year, South Africa’s automotive industry saw a gradual recovery in 2023, with a total of 532,098 vehicles sold, marking a 0.5% increase from 2022. Commercial vehicles played a significant role in driving sales, surpassing pre-pandemic numbers due to the country’s increased reliance on road transportation for goods.

The Toyota Hilux claimed the top spot as the best-selling vehicle, with an impressive 37,382 units sold throughout the year, followed closely by the Ford Ranger, which achieved 24,618 sales. In the passenger car segment, the VW Polo Vivo took the lead with 23,904 sales, closely followed by the Toyota Corolla Cross.
