The Double Ds emerged victorious at this year’s Freedom Day Challenge, capping off a thrilling day of cricket at Puntans Hill Sports Club with a hard-fought win over defending champions, the Fat Cats.
Held annually on Freedom Day, the tournament brought together four competitive sides — the Fat Cats, Mazafios, Joburg Sun Aces, and the Double Ds — in a showcase of local cricket talent and community spirit. The 2026 edition followed closely on the heels of another major moment for the Puntans Hill Sports Club, who had secured victory in the Macrocomm T20 tournament just a day earlier at the DP Wanderers Stadium.
The opening semi-final saw the Double Ds face their long-standing rivals, Joburg Sun Aces. In a high-intensity encounter, the Double Ds secured a 25-run win, with a standout opening partnership and sharp running between the wickets setting the tone.
In the second semi-final, the Fat Cats, two-time defending champions, took on the Mazafios. The Mazafios posted a challenging total of 151 runs on a difficult pitch, putting early pressure on the competition hosts. However, the Fat Cats responded with a composed and determined chase, reaching the target in impressive fashion to book their place in the final.
As anticipation built for the final clash, the stands filled with fans, friends, and families, creating an electric atmosphere at the ground.
Winning the toss, the Double Ds opted to bat first in the final. They were restricted to a modest total of 85 runs, with former Orlando Pirates footballer Daine Klate anchoring the innings with a crucial unbeaten 42. Despite the low target, the Double Ds delivered a disciplined and spirited bowling performance to defend their total.
The Fat Cats, chasing a third consecutive title, fell short as the Double Ds secured a 13-run victory. Kabelo Rapodile proved instrumental with the ball, claiming four wickets for just five runs in a match-winning spell. His performance not only sealed the final but also earned him both Bowler of the Tournament and Player of the Tournament honours. Mario Lennet of the Fat Cats was named Batter of the Tournament.
Double Ds captain Vukani Nzuza reflected on the team’s achievement, saying:
We came into this tournament focused and united. So this win means everything to the boys. We knew the Fat Cats were a strong side as back-to-back champions, but we backed ourselves. Kabelo’s spell was magical, and Daine showed why class is permanent. We’re not stopping here. This is just the beginning.”
Looking ahead, the Double Ds will return to action in the inaugural season of the Mzansi 20 League, set to begin on 9 May 2026 at Puntans Hill Sports Club. Organisers have indicated that the league is seeking new sponsors as it aims to grow its reach, attract larger crowds, and further elevate the standard of community cricket.
