Most discerning drinkers are familiar with names like Champagne and Cognac, both protected by strict rules that safeguard where they come from and how they are made. Far fewer people know that South Africa has its own equivalent.
Hidden among the vineyards of the Cape Wine Region is Cape Potstill Brandy, a premium spirit with protected provenance. To bear the name, it must be made from grapes grown in the Cape wine regions, double-distilled in traditional copper potstills and matured in oak barrels for at least three years. Some of the most premium expressions are aged for considerably longer, with 20-year-old releases showcasing how time in oak can add depth, character and complexity.
The result is a spirit that has built an enviable international reputation, with South African producers consistently earning top honours on the global stage. Yet despite its pedigree and international success, it remains relatively unknown.
That is set to change with the launch of the first ever National Brandy Day by Checkers LiquorShop on 28 September – an annual celebration designed to honour the country’s rich brandy heritage while introducing more consumers to the craftsmanship and provenance behind premium Cape Potstill Brandy.
