The South African Reserve Bank (SARB) has announced the launch of an annual memorial lecture honouring the late Tito Mboweni, who served as the institution’s governor, as well as the country’s Minister of Finance and Minister of Labour.

The inaugural event will feature Professor Axel A. Weber, former President of the Deutsche Bundesbank from 2004 to 2011. Weber currently serves as President of the Center for Financial Studies at Goethe University Frankfurt.

According to a statement from the central bank, the lecture series has been established to recognise Mboweni’s legacy as a leading advocate for sound economic policy. Throughout his public career, he emphasised the importance of building capable, transparent and accountable institutions committed to excellence.

The event is scheduled to take place at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC 2), located on the corner of Heerengracht and Rua Bartholomeu Dias Streets in the Foreshore district. Proceedings are set to begin at 15:00.

Attendance will be limited to the first 100 confirmed guests, allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. Confirmation requests must be submitted by 13 May 2026 via a dedicated online portal.
