Changan has officially launched its UNI-S mid-size SUV in South Africa, positioning the vehicle as a deliberate shift away from what the brand describes as a predictable segment. The arrival of the model was marked by a multi-day national launch event held at the Radisson Blu at OR Tambo International Airport in Kempton Park, where Changan introduced the UNI-S to dealers and media from across the country.

The rollout began with a dealer launch on 30 March, welcoming 50 guests including dealers representing the expanding national network. This was followed by two dedicated media launch days on 31 March and 1 April, each hosting 30 industry professionals and experts.

Designed for drivers who expect more from their vehicle and their wallet, the UNI-S introduces a new standard of what a modern SUV can deliver.

The launch experience was structured to mirror the vehicle itself, described as progressive, considered and confidence-driven. Guests were introduced to the vehicle through a full product reveal and brand presentation covering Changan’s global heritage, engineering capabilities and strategic vision for South Africa.

The event also marked the debut of the Changan brand television commercial, reinforcing the brand’s Driven to Evolve positioning. The following day, guests participated in a ride-and-drive route to the Hartbeespoort Dam, allowing them to experience the UNI-S in real-world conditions from urban roads to open stretches.

The UNI-S makes an immediate impression through a design language that is both progressive and purposeful, with sculpted bodywork, strong character lines and a confident stance. Premium exterior features include 19-inch alloy wheels, LED headlamps with daytime running lights, smart high beam functionality and an electric panoramic sunroof. Functional additions such as rain-sensing wipers, reverse-tilt electric folding mirrors and an electric tailgate further enhance convenience.

At the core of the UNI-S is Changan’s award-winning Blue Whale 1.5-litre turbocharged engine, delivering 138kW of power and 300Nm of torque, paired with a responsive seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. Advanced chassis engineering, including a multi-link independent rear suspension, ensures stability and comfort across varying road conditions.

Where the UNI-S differentiates itself is in the depth of technology available across the range. Inside the cabin, a 12.8-inch human-machine interaction display works alongside a 10.25-inch full LCD instrument cluster to create an immersive digital driving environment. Features such as Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, AI-Elf voice control functionality and a Bluetooth mobile phone key system ensure seamless connectivity.

Beyond convenience, the UNI-S offers a fully comprehensive suite of advanced driver assistance systems, including adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, lane keeping assist and blind spot detection, features unexpected in the category. Features such as heated and ventilated seats, electric seat adjustment and rear air vents contribute to a driving experience that is both comfortable and functional.

Marinus Venter, General Manager of Jameel Motors South Africa, said the UNI-S represents an important milestone for the Changan brand locally. “The UNI-S is a clear statement of intent for Changan in South Africa,” Venter said. “It reflects the level of engineering, technology and design that the brand is capable of delivering – and importantly, it does so in a way that directly meets the needs of local drivers.”

Supporting the UNI-S range is the Changan Journey after-sales programme, which provides a five-year or 150,000km warranty, a five-year or 90,000km service plan, and 24-hour roadside assistance for five years or 150,000km, backed by a national dealer network.

The UNI-S range consists of three models: the UNI-S CS from R389,900, the UNI-S CL from R429,900 and the UNI-S CE from R469,000. Vehicles are available in Black, Putty Grey, Shadow Grey, Fluorite Grey and Moon White. With the national launch now complete, Changan is positioning the UNI-S as a confident statement within the mid-size SUV segment, targeting South African drivers who are, in the brand’s phrasing, Driven To Evolve.
