What began as a mother’s mission to heal her son has grown into one of South Africa’s most inspiring wellness success stories. Today, Koketso Ramatlho, founder of Angela Care, is proving that personal passion, indigenous knowledge, and entrepreneurial grit can spark powerful change.

The Centurion-based entrepreneur’s journey began with her son’s severe eczema — a condition that left her searching for a solution when prescription treatments failed. It was her daughter, Angela, who suggested trying Moringa, a plant celebrated for its healing properties. Within weeks, her son’s skin had transformed. That breakthrough led Koketso to start crafting soaps and butters at home, inspired by the belief that natural ingredients could nurture the body and the earth.

Named in honour of her daughter’s compassion, Angela Care produces natural skin and hair care products powered by African botanicals such as Baobab, Moringa, and Turmeric. From humble kitchen experiments to a growing enterprise, Koketso now ships her products to customers in eight countries — a testament to how authenticity and perseverance can turn care into commerce.

A test of resilience — and a winning moment

Earlier this year, Koketso entered Engen The Making Of — the entrepreneurial reality show that challenges South African business owners to innovate, pitch, and perform under pressure. Competing against some of the country’s brightest minds, she proved to be one of the show’s most consistent and determined contestants.

And that persistence paid off. Koketso was crowned the winner of Engen The Making Of season 2, walking away with over R250 000 in cash prizes.

“It feels absolutely incredible,” she says. “It’s not just about the money, but what it represents — hard work and perseverance.”

She plans to reinvest the winnings into the business. “I’ve been expanding our offices and building a home lab, so this money will definitely help complete that process,” she explains. “Having our very own Angela Care Lab will allow us to research, test and formulate new products with greater creativity and precision — ensuring that every Angela Care product stays true to its promise of quality and natural excellence.”

For Koketso, the win represents far more than financial reward. “This win makes a massive impact, both personally and for Angela Care as a fast-growing brand. It gives me renewed confidence, motivation, and credibility. There were moments during the competition where I started doubting myself, but I pushed through. This win is a reminder never to doubt myself, even when the going gets tough.”

    Growth beyond the prize

Through Engen The Making Of, Koketso gained more than exposure — she developed new skills, confidence, and resilience. “The experience pushed me to think differently — not just as a business owner, but from the customer’s perspective too,” she reflects. “I learnt that losing a challenge doesn’t mean you’ve failed — it means you’ve found another way to grow. Engen The Making Of taught me to be gentler on myself and to see every setback as preparation for something bigger.”

From presenting complex pitches to managing team dynamics, the journey tested her adaptability. “When presenting a solution, you’re likely not the only one doing so — so what makes your solution the one they choose?” she says. “Challenge by challenge, I improved, and that’s a skill I’m truly grateful for.”

Beyond beauty: a mission rooted in care

For Koketso, entrepreneurship is deeply personal. Angela Care was born out of love and necessity — and continues to grow through purpose. “With Angela Care, my mission goes beyond beauty. It’s about holistic wellness rooted in indigenous ingredients and the healing power of nature,” she says. “This journey taught me to trust myself more, to take feedback seriously, and to embrace growth even when it feels uncomfortable.”

As viewers followed her story online, Koketso stood out not only for her business acumen but also for her warmth, humility, and perseverance. Her victory on Engen The Making Of is proof that success doesn’t come from perfection, but from persistence — and the courage to care.
