Allan Gray Makers has opened applications for its prestigious 2026 StartUp Academy, an intensive eight-month incubation programme tailored specifically for aspiring artisan entrepreneurs in the bricklaying, carpentry, electrical and plumbing trades. The initiative, fully funded by the Allan Gray Makers entrepreneurship development arm, aims to transform qualified tradespeople into successful business owners by equipping them with essential entrepreneurial skills, mentorship and practical support to launch sustainable enterprises.

Successful participants will receive a generous R3000 monthly transport allowance throughout the duration of the programme, ensuring financial barriers do not prevent attendance at training sessions and workshops. According to the official announcement published on the Opportunities For Africans platform, the academy targets individuals aged 18 to 35 who are either unemployed or self-employed but not engaged in full-time studies, creating opportunities for those already skilled in their craft to transition into business ownership.

Applicants must demonstrate proficiency in one of the four designated trades through either a recognised trade test certificate, three years of verifiable work experience with readiness to complete the trade test, or possession of an N2 certificate combined with three years of practical experience. As reported by BusinessTech, the programme has gained recognition for bridging the critical gap between technical expertise and business acumen in South Africa’s construction sector, where artisan entrepreneurs often struggle to navigate market access, financing and operational management.

The curriculum combines rigorous entrepreneurship training with sector-specific business development, covering areas such as financial literacy, customer acquisition, tender processes and regulatory compliance. Participants benefit from personalised mentorship by seasoned industry professionals and access to networks that facilitate contracts with established contractors and property developers.

Shortlisted candidates will progress through a two-stage selection process involving an online entrepreneurial readiness questionnaire followed by in-depth interviews assessing problem-solving capabilities, interpersonal skills and genuine commitment to building a viable enterprise. The academy places particular emphasis on selecting individuals who display resilience, innovation and a clear vision for scaling their trade-based businesses.

Since its inception, Allan Gray Makers has supported hundreds of artisan entrepreneurs, contributing significantly to job creation within local communities and addressing South Africa’s acute shortage of qualified tradespeople running formal enterprises. The 2026 cohort builds on this legacy at a time when government infrastructure projects and private sector developments are driving unprecedented demand for reliable, professionally managed construction services.

Applications must be submitted by 17:00 South African Standard Time on 30 January 2026 via the official portal, accompanied by certified copies of identity documents, relevant qualifications or trade test certificates, proof of work experience through service letters, and a National Senior Certificate where available. An active email address is mandatory for processing, with guidance provided for those needing to create one.

This opportunity represents a rare fully sponsored pathway for skilled tradespeople to escape the limitations of informal or subcontracted work and establish independent, growth-oriented businesses capable of employing others and contributing to economic transformation in the built environment sector.
