    South Africa’s employment sees modest increase of 0.4% in latest report

    According to the Quarterly Employment Statistics report released by Statistics South Africa, employment in South Africa has shown a slight quarter-on-quarter increase of 0.4%.

    1. The total number of employed individuals rose by 39,000, reaching 10,078,000 in June 2023, compared to 10,039,000 in March 2023.
    2. The sectors that experienced significant employment growth during this period were community services (40,000 or 1.4%), business services (12,000 or 0.5%), mining (2,000 or 0.4%), and electricity (1,000 or 1.7%).
    3. However, certain industries reported a decrease in employment, including manufacturing (-10,000 or -0.8%), transport (-3,000 or -0.7%), trade (-2,000 or -0.1%), and construction (-1,000 or -0.2%).
    4. On a year-on-year basis, total employment increased by 104,000 or 1.0% between June 2022 and June 2023.
    5. Full-time employment experienced a decrease of 25,000 or -0.3% quarter-on-quarter, primarily driven by declines in community services, manufacturing, construction, and transport sectors.
    6. Part-time employment, on the other hand, saw a quarter-on-quarter increase of 64,000 or 5.2%, with notable growth in community services, business services, construction, and electricity sectors.
