Gold production in Mozambique increased 53% in the first quarter of 2023 compared to the same period last year, totaling 346.3 kilograms.

    1. The government attributes the higher gold output to greater control of artisanal mining, improved performance from mining companies, exploration of hard rock deposits and a new processing plant.
    2. Production of other metals like tantalite, ilmenite and zircon also increased, while graphite output fell 39%.
    3. Among precious stones, ruby production totaled over 567,463 carats in the first quarter, though this was 54.5% lower than the same period last year.
    4. Overall, the Mozambican government is targeting 23.1% growth in mineral production for 2023 driven by higher output of rubies, coal, heavy sands, natural gas and construction materials.
