    Blue Security’s New Unit Changes Everything

    Leading private residential and commercial security companies often sit on a deep reserve of highly localised crime data, with valuable insight into how crime moves through specific suburbs, streets, and residential estates. Yet it is rare, especially in South Africa, for an armed-response company to have a dedicated unit that uses this data to predict and prevent crime at neighbourhood level, rather than only investigate it after the fact.

    Typically, firms monitor CCTV and alarms, patrol areas, and respond after burglaries, robberies, home invasions, or vehicle theft have occurred, often preserving evidence and liaising with police before the South African Police Service (SAPS) takes the matter forward. 

    Henk van Bemmelen, CEO of Blue Security, says, “While some security companies employ former detectives and intelligence analysts to support cases mainly after a crime has occurred, what’s still missing is a dedicated, integrated capability that uses highly localised crime data before, during, and after serious incidents to strengthen prevention, response, and case preparation.”

    Blue Security, KwaZulu-Natal’s leading private security company and the region’s number one rated security service provider for 16 consecutive years, has formally launched a dedicated investigative unit backed by substantial crime data. The specialist unit positions the company as the first private security operator in the province to offer a fully integrated investigation capability across its residential and commercial client base.

    The unit is staffed by seasoned former SAPS investigators and is designed to complement and strengthen police investigations while supporting Blue Security’s wider operations. Through immediate on-the-ground support, professional documentation, and crime intelligence, that helps SAPS move faster and gives Blue Security’s tactical teams and command centre clearer information to guide response and prevention.

    A 360-degree crime analysis, prevention, and response capability

    The unit operates on two tracks. Internally, investigators analyse Blue Security’s own crime intelligence data – captured through the company’s extensive camera network and its proprietary analytics platform – to identify patterns, track syndicate activity, and build investigative portfolios that support predictive crime prevention. 

    Complementing this digital capability, highly trained investigative officers are made available to Blue Security’s clients to provide professional investigation services for serious and violent crimes, including home invasions, vehicle hijackings, and incidents involving grievous bodily harm to homeowners, employees, or business owners.

    Externally, the unit also gives commercial clients access to professional investigative support where they need specialist assistance inside their own businesses. This includes matters such as internal theft, fraud, misconduct, stock losses, supplier-related irregularities, and other incidents that require discreet, properly documented investigation before a company can take internal disciplinary action, recover losses, or refer a matter to SAPS.

    For clients who experience a serious incident, the process is more immediate and optimised. Blue’s investigators attend the scene, sit with the client in their home or premises, prepare a formal statement, compile a complete evidence and case file, and hand it over to SAPS – with the documentation, evidence chain, and intelligence support already in place. The unit will then maintain active follow-up with SAPS where appropriate, providing additional documentation and crime intelligence from Blue Security’s data systems to support the investigation.

    Van Bemmelen is clear that the unit operates within a strict legal framework. “Only the state can register a docket and effect an arrest – a line we have no intention of crossing. Our purpose is not to replace SAPS, but to strengthen the quality of information, documentation, and early investigative work around serious incidents. When that foundation is made stronger, everyone involved in the process is better positioned to act.”

    A selective response for serious incidents

    The unit will only be deployed for major incidents. Blue Security has developed a merit-based ranking system that profiles crimes by severity, ensuring that investigators focus exclusively on serious and violent offences. Of Blue Security’s approximately 600 incidents per month, less than 20% meet the threshold for investigative unit involvement.

    For qualifying incidents, the service is included as part of Blue Security’s premium offering at no additional charge. Clients who require investigation services beyond the standard scope can access those on a bespoke basis.

    Blue Security operates in a market of approximately 1,700 registered security operators in Durban alone, where van Bemmelen says the company’s continued growth is attributed to its commitment to innovation and a refusal to treat security as a commodity.
