Capitec Hands Tech Reins to Baker

    February 18, 2026By Staff Writer
    Andrew Baker - Capitec CIO

Capitec has appointed Andrew Baker as its new chief information officer, marking a leadership transition at one of South Africa’s fastest-growing retail banks. Baker succeeds Wim de Bruyn, who has led the bank’s technology division since 2014 and will now oversee a portfolio covering payments, value-added services and foreign exchange.

Baker previously served as Capitec’s chief technology officer and has been credited with overseeing the migration of the bank’s core technology stack to Amazon Web Services and implementing zero-trust security frameworks to strengthen cybersecurity resilience. The move signals Capitec’s continued emphasis on digital infrastructure as competition intensifies in South Africa’s banking sector.

Before joining Capitec in 2022, Baker held senior technology roles at Absa Group and Barclays, including chief technology and information officer positions within corporate and investment banking. He was involved in integrating Barclays’ Barx trading platform into Absa’s systems during the separation process from its UK parent.
