The Industrial Development Corporation (IDC), South Africa’s leading development finance institution, is inviting applications for the position of Chief Operations Officer (COO). As a cornerstone of the country’s industrialisation agenda, the IDC promotes sustainable economic growth and development through targeted investments and strategic partnerships. Reporting directly to the Chief Executive Officer, this role offers an opportunity to influence the trajectory of South Africa’s industrial landscape at the highest operational level.

The COO will oversee the Operations cluster, which forms the core of the IDC’s lending and investment functions. This includes managing the full transaction value chain — from deal origination and due diligence to credit evaluation, structuring, negotiation, and closing. The successful candidate will be expected to enhance collaboration across all divisions, ensuring that every project aligns with the IDC’s mission of industrial growth and sustainable development.

A key part of the role will be to position the IDC at the centre of South Africa’s proactive industrialisation efforts. This will involve developing industry strategies, leading catalytic projects that drive economic transformation, and ensuring that funded initiatives deliver maximum developmental impact. The COO will also lead efforts to provide seamless customer service and maintain a balance between development outcomes, risk management, and financial sustainability.

Applicants should possess a relevant Bachelor’s degree, with a postgraduate qualification such as an MBA serving as a strong advantage. A minimum of 15 years’ experience, including at least five in an executive role, is required. The ideal candidate will have a solid background in corporate or business banking, or related financial services, and demonstrate deep understanding of industrialisation and government economic policy. Strong financial acumen, commercial insight, and a proven ability to lead cross-functional teams are essential, as are integrity and the capacity to build trust among diverse stakeholders.

Qualified candidates are invited to send their applications, including full career and contact details, to johannesburg@heidrick.com by 18 November 2025.
