The Council for Geoscience (CGS) is investigating the cause of an earthquake in Gauteng on Sunday.

    1. The earthquake had a magnitude of 4.4, according to the CGS, while the US Geological Survey recorded it as magnitude 5.
    2. The earthquake’s epicentre was located near the East Rand Proprietary Mine in Johannesburg.
    3. The mine was one of the largest and deepest gold mines in the world and was established in 1893.
    4. The cause of the earthquake is unclear at this stage, but it may be related to mining or fluctuations in groundwater levels.
    5. The CGS is investigating the incident further and has encouraged residents to share their experiences.
    6. An earthquake with a magnitude of 2.5 to 5.4 is often felt but only causes minor damage, according to Michigan Technological University.
