Isuzu Motors South Africa (IMSAf) has appointed Johan Vermeulen as Executive Vice President: Manufacturing and Product Engineering and as a Director on the company’s Board of Directors, effective 1 September 2026.
In his role, Vermeulen will provide executive leadership for Manufacturing and Product Engineering for the ISUZU D-MAX and commercial truck ranges manufactured at the IMSAf operations in Gqeberha. As a member of the Board of Directors, he will also contribute to the strategic direction and governance of the business.
Vermeulen brings more than three decades of automotive industry experience to the role, having built his career within the organisation across both engineering and manufacturing. He began his career as a Maintenance Engineer at Delta Motor Corporation in 1995 and has since held progressively senior roles contributing to the development of the company’s manufacturing capability and leading teams across complex operational environments.
“Johan brings an exceptional depth of manufacturing and engineering experience, combined with a grounded and people-centred approach to leadership. Having contributed to the development of our operations for more than three decades, he understands both the complexity of our business and the importance of our people in driving its success,” said Billy Tom, President of Isuzu Motors South Africa. “His experience and perspective will be valuable as we continue to strengthen our business and position IMSAf for sustainable growth.”
His appointment marks an important progression from leading manufacturing operations to taking on broader enterprise-level responsibility. His extensive operational knowledge brings valuable continuity to the Board, while his expanded mandate will further strengthen the connection between manufacturing, product engineering and the company’s long-term strategic priorities.
Commenting on his appointment, Vermeulen said he was honoured by the opportunity and looked forward to the responsibilities of his expanded role.
“My role may be changing, but my approach to leadership remains the same. Every role matters because every person has a different contribution to make. For me, leadership is about remaining humble and authentic, treating people with respect and creating an environment where they can make their best contribution.”
Vermeulen’s leadership philosophy has been shaped by decades of leading people in technically complex environments and is grounded in humility, authenticity and respect. Vermeulen believes leadership responsibility should never create distance between leaders and the people they serve, and that trust must be earned through consistent actions and respect for others.
Reflecting on the impact he hopes to make, Vermeulen added: “I would like to leave this place as a better person than when I started and having made a meaningful difference in people’s lives and contributed to the growth and legacy of the company for future generations.”
