Compendium Insurance Brokers has appointed Dini Nondumo as chief executive, effective 1 October 2026. He will be based at the firm’s Durban office.

The brokerage said Nondumo would lead its next phase of growth, strategy and long-term planning. It described the appointment as a step in strengthening its market position and pursuing expansion.

Nondumo brings more than 20 years of executive experience across insurance and financial services. His record spans commercial growth, business transformation, strategic partnerships and market expansion, at businesses ranging from start-ups to large corporate operations.

Before joining Compendium, Nondumo was head of commercial insurance at Standard Bank Insurance, part of Africa’s largest bank by assets. At the state-owned Land Bank Insurance Company, which covers farmers and agricultural assets, he ran distribution and sales from 2015 to 2020. He also led Dimaru, an underwriting business in Hollard’s Risk Select partner network, and has headed technology and investment businesses.

He holds a master’s degree in management in entrepreneurship from Wits Business School, a bachelor of social science from the University of Cape Town and a higher certificate in short-term insurance from Milpark Business School.

The appointment comes as the short-term insurance market recovers from several years of heavy losses. Prudential Authority data shows that South Africa’s 56 primary non-life insurers wrote R49.4bn in gross premiums in the period to December 2025, up 4.1% on a year earlier. Their claims ratio improved to 51.4% from 54.6%. Underwriting profit rose 31% to R4.9bn, and the combined ratio, which measures claims and expenses against premiums, fell to 90.6% from 95.3%.

That recovery follows a difficult run for insurers and brokers, particularly in KwaZulu-Natal. The July 2021 unrest produced the largest insured loss in South African history, about R32bn, most of it paid through the state insurer Sasria. The April 2022 floods in Durban and surrounding areas added a further R4bn-plus in claims, mostly in the province. Both events pushed up premiums and reinsurance costs, and tightened underwriting for commercial clients.

Brokers make up a large part of how commercial and personal cover reaches clients, and they face growing pressure. Insurers are building their own direct channels, regulators are raising conduct and capital standards, and larger groups are buying up independent firms. Mid-sized brokerages have answered by consolidating, specialising in particular sectors, and partnering with underwriting management agencies to win business.

Nondumo’s background in commercial lines, agricultural cover and distribution fits that environment. The brokerage did not disclose its premium income, client numbers or specific expansion targets. It also did not say whom Nondumo replaces.

The move adds to leadership changes across the industry, as groups including Old Mutual Insure, Santam and Hollard have appointed new executives over the past two years to reposition for growth after the loss-heavy period.
