The recent launch of the 1Life Personal Legal Plan and 1Life Legal Business Planmarks an exciting milestone for 1Life, expanding its product portfolio and extending its protection proposition into an area that can have a significant impact on the financial wellbeing of individuals, families and businesses.

Legal challenges are an increasingly important part of the protection conversation in South Africa, especially for those looking to build wealth. For consumers, disputes around employment, unfair blacklisting, contracts, accidents and family matters can quickly become financially and emotionally disruptive, particularly when access to professional legal advice feels out of reach. Businesses face their own pressures, from labour disputes and debt recovery to contracts, compliance and commercial disagreements. Access to appropriate legal guidance and representation can therefore be as important to protecting financial wellbeing as cover for more traditional risks.

The launch sees 1Life bringing affordable, professional legal protection to its market through its broker channels, with personal and business solutions designed to address different legal needs. The Personal Legal Plan provides cover for the main member, spouse and children up to age 21 if they are full-time students, across civil, criminal and labour matters*.

Benefits include a 24-hour legal helpline, bail benefit, retrenchment cover, personalised legal documents and consultation. Members can also access optional accidental death cover for a spouse and extended family legal cover, providing additional protection based on their needs.

For existing 1Life members, the expansion represents another step in broadening the ways the brand can help customers protect what matters most. Rather than viewing protection through a single lens, 1Life is continuing to build a more comprehensive portfolio that responds to the real-life challenges that can affect financial security. The addition of legal protection gives customers and their families another potential layer of support when navigating complex or unexpected situations.

    Extending protection to businesses

The 1Life Legal Business Plan extends this proposition into the business market, covering businesses with between one and 2,000 employees, with premiums scaled according to team size and turnover. It provides support across civil matters, labour disputes, commercial contracts and debt recovery, backed by in-house legal experts and a nationwide panel of attorneys.

For businesses, the plan can provide assistance with contract drafting and review, debt collection, payment arrangements, workplace disputes and representation at the CCMA, Bargaining Councils and Labour Court.

“At 1Life, changing lives means helping people not only build a stronger financial future, but protect what they have built for themselves and the generations that follow. Legal challenges can have a significant financial impact on individuals, families and businesses, and access to the right advice and support can make an important difference. The launch of 1Life Legal is an extension of our commitment to providing protection that responds to the realities of our customers’ lives – helping them safeguard their financial wellbeing and, ultimately, the wealth they are working to build and pass on,” says Laurence Hillman, CEO at 1Life Insurance.

The 1Life Legal Plan is a non-life insurance policy underwritten and administered by Clientèle General Insurance Limited, a licensed non-life insurer and authorised Financial Services Provider, FSP no. 34655. * Terms and conditions apply.
