The Green Building Council South Africa has named Georgina Smit as its new chief executive officer, with the appointment taking effect from May 2026. The announcement, delivered at the organisation’s eighteenth annual Green Building Convention in Cape Town, signals a seamless internal succession as Smit steps up from her current role as head of technical and executive director to replace Lisa Reynolds, who has steered the council since 2020.

According to the council’s official statement, Reynolds leaves behind a strengthened institution that has cemented its status as the country’s pre-eminent authority on sustainable construction, expanding certification schemes, delivering industry-leading training programmes, and advocating for climate-resilient design standards across the built environment. As reported by Engineering News, her tenure navigated post-pandemic challenges to restore financial stability, rebuild stakeholder confidence, and position GBCSA as a pivotal voice in South Africa’s transition to a low-carbon economy.

Smit brings formidable credentials to the leadership role. An award-winning sustainability specialist, she holds undergraduate and master’s degrees from Stellenbosch University, complemented by a second master’s from the University of Cambridge. Her decade at global consultancy Arup honed expertise in complex green infrastructure projects before she joined GBCSA over five years ago, where she has spearheaded certification advancements, research initiatives, and educational offerings that have driven measurable decarbonisation across the property sector.

Widely regarded as a thought leader, Smit regularly addresses international forums and is recognised for crafting pragmatic, locally relevant solutions that accelerate green building adoption. Outgoing chairperson André Theys praised Reynolds for transforming uncertainty into opportunity during turbulent times, while expressing full confidence in Smit’s ability to shift the organisation from consolidation to ambitious growth as the 2030 net-zero deadline looms.

The incoming chief executive has outlined a forward-looking agenda centred on democratising access to practical decarbonisation tools, enabling businesses to align corporate strategies with national climate commitments. Priorities include scaling certification programmes to reach previously underserved market segments, deepening partnerships with government and private-sector champions, and amplifying training initiatives that support a just energy transition by creating skilled careers in sustainable construction.

Smit’s vision also emphasises broader social impact, with GBCSA committed to equipping workforces for a climate-resilient future while expanding its influence over South Africa’s R3.5 trillion property and construction industry. The council currently certifies millions of square metres annually under its Green Star and EDGE schemes, alongside delivering accredited courses that have upskilled thousands of professionals since inception.

Reynolds expressed unwavering belief in her successor’s capacity to elevate the organisation further, highlighting Smit’s track record of decisive action and strategic foresight, particularly in championing environmental, social, and governance frameworks within sustainable finance circles. The leadership handover coincides with renewed momentum in the sector, as major developers and institutional investors increasingly mandate green building standards to meet global reporting requirements and mitigate climate risk.

With South Africa facing mounting pressure to slash built-environment emissions—responsible for nearly 40% of national carbon output—GBCSA’s refreshed leadership arrives at a critical juncture. Recent policy developments, including updated energy-performance regulations and municipal incentives for certified projects, have created fertile ground for accelerated transformation under Smit’s stewardship.

As the council prepares for its next chapter, the appointment reinforces its role as the driving force behind a greener, more resilient South African built environment, poised to deliver tangible progress toward the country’s 2050 net-zero ambitions.
