Spar has officially entered South Africa’s expanding pet retail market with the launch of its new franchise brand, Pet Storey. The first outlet opened in Boksburg, having transformed a former Pet Masters location.

The supermarket chain plans to establish between 25 and 30 Pet Storey outlets across the country by the end of the year, with ambitions to reach at least 100 stores by the close of 2026.

Pet Storey aims to provide a comprehensive range of products and services for pets, including food, grooming services, probiotic wellness items, treats, tasting stations, and toys. The stores will be designed as standalone locations or integrated into community shopping centres.

A spokesperson for Spar highlighted that this venture aligns with the growing trend of pet humanisation, where pet owners seek deeper companionship with their animals. The spokesperson noted that with more South Africans spending time at home, the value placed on pet companionship has increased. This new brand is a response to those changing consumer behaviours.

Furthermore, the initiative is expected to create opportunities for both new and existing entrepreneurs. Spar is encouraging independent pet retailers to transition their businesses into Spar-affiliated outlets, providing them with valuable resources such as training and supply-chain support.

The pet retail market in South Africa is becoming increasingly competitive as major supermarket chains seek to capture a share of this lucrative sector. Checkers was an early mover, launching its standalone Petshop Science stores in 2011 and expanding rapidly to 128 outlets by the end of 2024. In addition, Food Lover’s Market has introduced VetsMart stores next to some of its locations, while Woolworths entered the market by acquiring the specialist retailer Absolute Pets in late 2023.

With the introduction of Pet Storey, Spar adds a significant player to the mix in a market valued between R7 billion and R10 billion.
