Roger Jardine, the former chair of FirstRand, has joined Old Mutual’s board as an independent non-executive director, marking a return to the corporate sector after a short-lived foray into politics. His appointment comes after he launched a presidential campaign during last year’s pivotal elections, which resulted in a government of national unity.

Old Mutual, chaired by Trevor Manuel, announced Jardine’s addition along with financial services expert Jan-Hendrik Erasmus, pending regulatory approval. Manuel expressed enthusiasm about the new board members, highlighting their exceptional leadership and governance experience, which will bolster the company’s strategic goals.

    Board Enhancements

Both Jardine and Erasmus are expected to provide valuable insights into the financial services, information technology, and investment sectors. They will contribute significant expertise in audit, actuarial services, risk management, and operational matters. Manuel emphasized that their appointments align with Old Mutual’s commitment to a structured board renewal process, ensuring the company remains well-positioned to deliver sustainable value to all stakeholders.

Prior to his political ambitions, Jardine served as FirstRand’s chair until late 2023. He made headlines when he opted to launch a political party called Change Starts Now, advocating for a smaller government and increased private sector involvement in economic growth. In his final communication to shareholders, Jardine expressed concerns over the slow pace of reforms and the potential of the private sector to partner effectively with the government.

    Political Aspirations and Challenges

Unfortunately, Jardine’s political party did not make it to the ballot, as the Constitutional Court dismissed an application from the Independent Candidates Association. This application sought to increase the number of National Assembly seats available to independent candidates in the general elections.

Old Mutual has welcomed Jardine’s extensive experience, noting his reputation as a respected business leader with deep knowledge in financial services, governance, and stakeholder engagement. With his return to the corporate arena, Jardine is set to play a key role in shaping Old Mutual’s future direction.
