Shoprite has announced a remarkable achievement, with its sales surpassing R250 billion for the year ended June 2025. The retail giant’s revenue grew by 8.6%, reaching R256.7 billion, driven mainly by a strong performance in its core supermarket operations across South Africa.

During the period, total merchandise sales increased by 8.9% to R252.7 billion, with the South African supermarkets segment contributing R213.5 billion—up 9.5% from the previous year. The company also opened 281 new stores and created 8,723 jobs, demonstrating its ongoing commitment to growth and employment.

Pieter Engelbrecht, Shoprite’s CEO, highlighted that the company’s sales growth equated to R20.6 billion in extra revenue, underpinned by a focus on customer value and affordability. He praised the teams for their dedication in maintaining low inflation on prices—just 2.3%—while expanding promotional activity.

In South Africa, Shoprite and Usave experienced a 5.9% sales increase, or R6.5 billion, from a base of R110.1 billion. Despite economic pressures on consumers, the company managed to keep sell-inflation below 2%. Checkers, the premium value brand, achieved impressive growth of 13.8%, adding R11.6 billion in sales to reach nearly R100 billion.

The company’s on-demand delivery platform, Sixty60, saw a 47.7% rise in sales, reaching R18.9 billion. Its high customer satisfaction, with 94% on-time deliveries and 97% order fulfillment, demonstrates its success in the fast-growing online shopping space.

Shoprite also announced ongoing plans to sell its furniture business, which is now classified as discontinued. The decision was motivated by the desire to focus on higher-growth regions and better capital allocation. Despite delays caused by regulatory processes, the company remains committed to concluding the sale and supporting the business’s future growth.

Looking ahead, Shoprite is expanding its omnichannel retail platform, launching a new Checkers website for online shopping and delivery within an hour. The company aims to become South Africa’s “everyday store,” with ambitions to extend its delivery services across more categories and formats.

Pieter Engelbrecht expressed pride in the team’s achievements and gratitude to customers. As the retailer prepares for another year, Shoprite is focused on growth, investment, and delivering value for all its stakeholders.
