This year’s Hollywoodbets Durban July, themed ‘Marvels of Mzansi’, is projected to inject R700 million into eThekwini’s GDP while attracting over 50,000 visitors to the city on July 5. The prestigious horse racing event at Greyville Racecourse will showcase South Africa’s cultural heritage alongside its traditional blend of high fashion and competitive sport. Mayor Cyril Xaba confirmed comprehensive safety plans are in place, with heightened police visibility throughout the city to ensure visitor security during the festivities.

Beyond the racetrack, the event promises significant economic benefits, including R278 million in direct spending and the creation of 4,000 temporary jobs. The municipality has partnered with the Hollywood Foundation to present the Durban July Fashion Experience, featuring 25 designers across three categories. Emerging talent will compete for bursaries and a R250,000 business development prize, while established designers showcase collections to thousands of potential buyers. This fashion platform forms part of the city’s broader strategy to nurture creative industries alongside major events.

Local officials emphasize the event’s role in positioning Durban as a premier entertainment destination. “The city transforms into a hub of glamour and world-class entertainment,” said Economic Development Chairperson Thembo Ntuli. With integrated security measures and anticipated full occupancy at hospitality venues, the Durban July continues to demonstrate how major sporting events can drive tourism while supporting creative sectors and local employment. The 2025 edition builds on this legacy, celebrating South African culture while delivering measurable economic impact.
