Woolworths has assured customers that it is working swiftly to replenish its shelves following supply chain disruptions that have resulted in shortages of fresh produce and meat. The retailer faced challenges caused by supplier issues and severe weather conditions, which significantly impacted product availability. Customers across South Africa expressed frustration after photos of empty shelves surfaced online, particularly in the vegetable and meat sections.
The retailer explained that recent heavy rains in key agricultural regions like Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal damaged crops such as lettuce, spinach, and cauliflower. This disruption to the supply chain left stores struggling to maintain stock levels. To address the issue, Woolworths has begun sourcing fresh produce from alternative regions, with improvements expected within a week. Meanwhile, the shortage of red meat was linked to supplier-related problems rather than weather conditions. The company confirmed it was working with suppliers to resolve the issue and reassured customers that stock would return to normal soon.
This is not the first supply challenge Woolworths has faced this year. In January, the retailer experienced a temporary avocado shortage linked to altered harvest schedules in KwaZulu-Natal, reduced crop yields in the Eastern Cape, and transport delays from Tanzania. To prevent ongoing issues, Woolworths is now sourcing additional supplies from Mozambique and Limpopo, aiming to stabilise its fresh produce offerings. The company remains committed to improving its supply chain resilience to ensure smoother operations in the future.
