GirlCode, an organization dedicated to enhancing software development skills among young women in Africa, is set to host a Pan-African hackathon focused on empowering female technologists. Scheduled for August 31 to September 1, the event invites talented women from across the continent to participate in a collaborative environment.
The hackathon’s goal is to unite skilled female technologists to create innovative solutions that address the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. This two-day event will allow participants to work with peers, learn from industry leaders, and showcase their technical expertise. By addressing global challenges, the participants can positively impact their communities and contribute to a more sustainable future.
“We are thrilled to host our first Pan-African, all-women hackathon and provide a platform for women to shine,” says Zandile Mkwanazi, GirlCode CEO. “By bringing together top talent and industry leaders, we aim to inspire and empower the next generation of female technologists.”
Founded in 2013, GirlCode is a non-profit organization with a mission to empower young girls and women through technology. It seeks to build a strong pipeline of female tech leaders and drive positive change across Africa. GirlCode aims to expose 10 million women and girls to technology by 2030.
The annual GirlCodeHack, traditionally held in August to celebrate Women’s Month in South Africa, is made possible through the support of sponsors such as Vumatel, Chenosis, NinetyOne, BET Software, iKhokha, VML, and Boxfusion. The Takealot Group is sponsoring prizes, including laptops and tech gadgets, for the winning teams. Additionally, Chenosis offers winners the chance to attend an International Women in Tech conference.
