    South Africa’s First Hybrid Bakkie

    August 13, 2024
GWM Unveils South Africa’s First Hybrid Bakkie: The P500 Revolution

In a groundbreaking move, GWM has introduced the P-Series P500 Double-Cab bakkie, marking South Africa’s first petrol-electric hybrid bakkie. This innovative vehicle features a 325-volt electric motor, positioning it as the second most powerful double-cab bakkie in its segment. Initially showcased at the 2024 NAMPO trade show in May, the P500 is a part of GWM’s expanding portfolio, which also includes the Tank 300 and 500 SUVs, ORA electric models, and the new Jolion SUV PRO.

The P500 offers a choice between a 2-litre turbocharged petrol self-charging hybrid and a new 2.4L Turbo Diesel engine. The top-of-the-range P500 HEV delivers an impressive 255kW and 648Nm of torque, featuring a 9-speed automatic transmission and standard 4×4 capabilities. Measuring 5400mm in length and 1991mm in width, the P500 is designed for adventure, accommodating five passengers and substantial cargo.

GWM has equipped the P500 with innovative features like an electrically operated rear sliding window, 28 anchor points in the loadbox, a loadbox lamp, and a unique split rear tailgate with multiple opening options for easy loading. “The P500 bakkie is arguably the most well-equipped bakkie on the market right now. As a brand, we take full advantage of China’s position as a leader in technological innovation in the automotive industry. With the P500, GWM also demonstrates the company’s innovative approach to design and engineering in what is usually a humdrum segment of the automotive sector. The P500 is a thrilling driver’s vehicle with rugged capabilities on and off-road. I am confident that with this product, GWM will challenge consumer perceptions of what a leisure bakkie can offer,” stated Kevin Li, GWM South Africa’s newly appointed Managing Director.

    State-of-the-Art Powertrain

The P500’s hybrid powertrain offers a seamless driving experience, combining a 78kW (268Nm) electric motor with a 2-liter 180kW (380Nm) petrol engine, producing a total output of 255kW and 648Nm of torque. This reflects GWM’s dedication to leadership in New Energy Vehicles. The hybrid system’s efficiency results in a combined fuel consumption of 9.8 l/100km and CO2 emissions of 225g/km. Additionally, the P500 boasts a towing capacity of up to 3500kg, making it suitable for any terrain or adventure.

For traditional bakkie enthusiasts, the P500 is also available with a 2.4L Turbo Diesel engine, generating 135kW and 480Nm of torque, with a claimed fuel consumption of 8.6l/100km. This robust vehicle features selectable low-range gears and front and rear differential locks for superior off-road capabilities.

    Bold Exterior Design

The P500’s bold design is immediately noticeable, featuring a large grille with distinctive LED headlights. The grille houses the front camera and sensors for the 360-view camera, integrated into the P-Series logo. Additional sensors for the intelligent drive system and anti-collision radar are located on the front bumper, alongside LED front fog lamps.

The P500 includes standard roof rails and fixed side steps, enhancing its adventure-ready appearance. The rear-view camera, part of the 360-degree camera system, is positioned on the easy-lift tailgate, which has a unique split opening for effortless loading. LED taillights and a high-mounted brake light contribute to the vehicle’s premium feel.

In a GWM first, the P500 is the only bakkie in South Africa with a panoramic sunroof that offers tilt and slide functions.

    Spacious and Comfortable Cabin

Inside, the P500 offers extensive comfort and luxury, featuring Knight Black interiors with woodgrain-style trim. The newly designed three-spoke leather steering wheel is electronically adjustable and includes memory functions. Steering-mounted controls provide easy access to the vehicle’s features, including the Head-Up Display and multimedia infotainment system.

A 12.3-inch or 14.6-inch multimedia touchscreen display provides an intuitive interface for accessing vehicle functions and settings. The P500 Ultra Luxury model boasts a 10-speaker Harman Infinity™ audio system for superior sound quality.

The spacious cabin includes high-quality black Nappa leather seats with heating, cooling, and an 8-option massage function for the driver and front passenger. The rear seats offer electronically adjustable headrests, heating and cooling options, and independent split-folding.

The P500 is designed for comfort with a soundproof windshield and windows, ensuring a quiet ride.

    Enhanced Safety Specifications

The GWM P500 sets a new standard for safety, offering advanced features typically found in luxury vehicles. These include Automatic Emergency Braking, Lane Keep Assist, and a Driver Fatigue Monitoring System. The bakkie also includes cross-traffic alert, smart dodge, a 360-degree camera system, and adaptive cruise control. Additionally, the P500 is equipped with seven airbags, including a center airbag to protect occupants in case of a collision.
