Mini has introduced two important new models, the all-new Cooper electric hatchback and Countryman SUV, signaling a significant move towards the brand’s electrification goals. The models also feature updated design aesthetics and modern interior electronics.
- The new Cooper electric hatch retains similar dimensions to its predecessor, while the Countryman has grown larger, measuring 4,433mm in length, making it 136mm longer than the current version. It shares its platform and wheelbase with the latest BMW X1, but remains shorter than its counterpart by 77mm.
- The Cooper electric hatch is built on a new architecture developed in collaboration with GWM of China. However, reports suggest that there will still be an internal combustion engine (ICE) version of the Mini Cooper with similar styling, built on a modified version of the current architecture. Mini aims to transition to an all-electric brand by 2030.
- The Countryman SUV utilizes a single platform that accommodates both electric and ICE models. The press material emphasizes the electric variants, while only briefly mentioning the petrol and diesel models. The Countryman E offers 150kW and 250Nm output with a claimed range of up to 462km, while the all-wheel drive Countryman SE ALL4 boasts 230kW and 494Nm, along with a 433km range.
- Both the new Cooper hatchback and Countryman SUV feature a similar cockpit design, highlighted by a large circular OLED infotainment touchscreen display in the center of the dashboard. The Mini Operating System 9, based on BMW’s latest system, provides updated electronics, including a cloud-based navigation system and the introduction of the Mini Intelligent Personal Assistant.
- The new Mini models offer improved range times due to the new platform and battery technology. The Cooper E provides outputs of 135kW and 290Nm with a 305km claimed range, while the Cooper SE delivers 160kW and 330Nm, offering an estimated range of 402km.
- South African availability, pricing, and detailed specifications for the new Mini Cooper and Countryman models will be announced at a later date.
