The National Research Foundation (NRF) and Telkom have unveiled their collaborative Future Technologies (FutureTech) program, aimed at co-funding technology research grants and postgraduate projects. This initiative targets the enhancement of research and development within South African universities, promoting innovation in the ICT sector.
NRF CEO Dr. Fulufhelo Nelwamondo expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, emphasizing its role in building science and technology capacity in South Africa. This collaboration aligns with NRF’s mandate and aims to ensure that the skills developed meet industry needs.
Telkom views FutureTech as a continuation of its Centres of Excellence (CoE) program, which has supported tertiary institutions for 26 years. OpenServe CEO Althon Beukes highlighted the program’s focus on developing skilled professionals through postgraduate training, internships, and mentorship opportunities.
FutureTech prioritizes diversity and aims to support historically disadvantaged institutions with targeted funding and collaborative efforts. The program also addresses socioeconomic goals, focusing on skills development and promoting social inclusion.
The initiative will begin with a three-year pilot phase, concentrating on critical areas such as network solutions, the Internet of Things, and the development of AI and language technologies. This partnership positions both NRF and Telkom to significantly contribute to the advancement of South Africa’s ICT landscape.
