Gold production in Mozambique increased 53% in the first quarter of 2023 compared to the same period last year, totaling 346.3 kilograms.
- The government attributes the higher gold output to greater control of artisanal mining, improved performance from mining companies, exploration of hard rock deposits and a new processing plant.
- Production of other metals like tantalite, ilmenite and zircon also increased, while graphite output fell 39%.
- Among precious stones, ruby production totaled over 567,463 carats in the first quarter, though this was 54.5% lower than the same period last year.
- Overall, the Mozambican government is targeting 23.1% growth in mineral production for 2023 driven by higher output of rubies, coal, heavy sands, natural gas and construction materials.
