    South Africa leads Africa’s green hydrogen alliance

    South Africa has been awarded the Chairship of the Africa Green Hydrogen Alliance (AGHA), which aims to drive decarbonization through green hydrogen projects on the continent.

    1. South Africa will use its position to advance the green hydrogen agenda in Africa, promoting peer-to-peer learning, technology transfer, and economic and employment opportunities.
    2. Green hydrogen and large-scale renewable energy production are seen as crucial components of South Africa’s future energy mix, supporting the expansion of electricity transmission infrastructure and renewable energy generation capacity.
    3. AGHA focuses on collaboration, regulatory policy, capacity building, financing, and certification to mobilize green hydrogen production for domestic use and export.
    4. During the Chairship announcement, it was revealed that Ethiopia and Angola have joined AGHA alongside the existing member countries of Egypt, Kenya, Mauritania, Morocco, Namibia, and South Africa.
    5. Minister in the Presidency for Electricity, Dr. Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, participated in panel sessions during the Africa Climate Summit, sharing insights on South Africa’s energy outlook and the role of green hydrogen in energy security and green industrialization.
    6. On the sidelines of the summit, the Minister engaged in high-level bilateral meetings to explore energy collaborations and partnerships that support consistent, sustainable, and affordable energy supply for South Africa.
