Bell Equipment, a leading manufacturer and distributor of material handling equipment, faced a challenging financial year ending December 2024, with revenue falling by 13% to R11.7 billion. Declining demand across construction and mining industries led to a 37% drop in operating profit, which stood at R754.4 million, while total profit fell 41% to R471 million. However, the company managed to generate a net cash inflow of R458 million, a stark turnaround from the previous year’s outflow of R504 million. Improved working capital management and reduced capital expenditure contributed to this positive cash flow, allowing the company to resume dividend payments after a year’s pause.
Despite financial headwinds, Bell Equipment continues to expand its global footprint. The company operates 112 independent dealerships worldwide, with 22 Bell-owned branches in South Africa. Its manufacturing facilities in Richards Bay and Germany support distribution to both the southern and northern hemisphere markets. In 2023, Bell established a new parts logistics centre in South Carolina to strengthen its position in the United States, the largest market for articulated dump trucks. Industry forecasts suggest this sector will grow from $7.59 billion in 2025 to $9.44 billion by 2030, driven by demand for heavy-duty vehicles in construction and mining. The company aims to capitalise on this growth by enhancing its original equipment manufacturer (OEM) products and increasing market share in key regions.
Meanwhile, Bell Equipment’s founding family remains invested in the company’s future. Holding approximately 70% of shares through IA Bell, they recently attempted to take the business private, offering minority shareholders R53 per share. However, the bid failed due to insufficient shareholder support. In January 2024, Ashley Bell took over as CEO, continuing the legacy of third-generation leadership within the company. Bell Equipment’s long-term strategy remains focused on organic growth, product development, and expanding its contract manufacturing division in Richards Bay to strengthen its market position.
